In 2003, Stephen got cancer, meningitis and TB. His body couldn’t fight the infections – he had given up hope, and was dying. But a local church project, supported by Tearfund, stepped in. They showed practical love to Stephen, they prayed for him and they helped him access anti-retroviral medicines (ARVs). Stephen grew strong again, and has devoted the rest of his life to helping others living with HIV.
At Tearfund, we believe in miracles. And we believe that we’re part of a miracle – the miracle of poverty and injustice overcome through the local church, and of lives transformed. We’re part of it, along with others – with Stephen and his local church, with others like them around the world and with each and every one of our amazing supporters. Together, we make up the global church. And we’re all part of the miracle.
We have a vision to see 50 million people released from material and spiritual poverty through a worldwide network of 100,000 local churches. It’s a pretty big vision, but then we like to think big. It gets us up in the morning. Our vision is part of an even bigger one: God’s vision. We’re a Christian organisation. We believe that each and every one of us is fearfully and wonderfully made to reflect God’s love to the world around us, to nurture hope and transformation.
