The 1960s

1960 - World Refugee Year

Without being asked, many members of the Evangelical Alliance send money to the Alliance, knowing it has contacts with missionaries working with refugees. Over the next few years donations continue to grow. The file for these is marked EAR Fund (Evangelical Alliance Refugee Fund).

 

1968

BIAFRA...Civil War in Nigeria leads to terrible famine - hunger on TV news.

Decision is taken to develop EAR Fund and go public under the leadership of Rev George Hoffman. 'The' is added, and Refugee becomes Relief - hence The Evangelical Alliance Relief Fund - Tearfund. First ever grant is made to a development programme in Argentina.
Annual Income: 68/69 £34,000

 

1969

Cliff Richard gives his first Tearfund concert in the Royal Albert Hall.
Annual Income: 69/70 £55,000.
