Glossary

This glossary accompanies the Terms and Conditions for the Tearfund's free online services.

Account A credit or debit card or any other electronic cash facility in your name that you use to make a payment to us via the Online Services.
Banner A general term for advertisements and messages from third parties which website providers allow onto their websites.  Simple banners are picture hyperlinks that take you to another site.  Banners can also carry software that tracks your movements and reports them back to the banner owner, for example so they can learn about your buying habits.
Cookie

Internet protocols restrict how websites can save information on your computer, or read it from your computer.  The main way websites can read and write on your computer is by cookies.  A cookie is a text file, and can only be saved in a designated directory (which is commonly called ‘/cookies’).  A website decides what information is saved as text in a cookie, not you.  A website can also look at cookies saved by third parties, to learn about you.  Most internet browsers allow you to disable cookies.

Saving information can stop you having to re-type it several times, so cookies can be convenient.  They can also expose you to serious breaches of security and confidentiality, because websites sometimes use cookies to save usernames and passwords.  Tearfund do not use cookies in this way. Allowing websites to read your cookies can lead to breaches of your privacy or security.

Information Information means the types of information referred to in paragraph 9 of the Terms.

Web Beacon

A transparent image stored in a web-page or e-mail that is used to track your activities and send the information to a central database.  They are used to manage multiple cookies.  Web beacons are also known as web bugs and clear GIFs.

E-mail web beacons can track what you do on the host web-page or e-mail to form a picture of you and your preferences.  Based on the information recovered using web beacons about your interests and preferences, the content of cookies will be managed.  The end purpose is to personalize the content shown to you by the website.
