2006 campaigning review

Another eventful campaigning year, as progress in some areas was tempered by frustration in others. Remind yourself of the key moments that defined campaigning in 2006.

Key moments

March

Fairtrade Fortnight: Another successful Fairtrade Fortnight highlighted the continued growth both in market share and range of Fairtrade products.

Climate change ‘speed dating’ lobby: More than 700 supporters lobbied MPs at the first public Stop Climate Chaos event.

DfID disaster policy launch: Tearfund hosted the launch of DfID's latest policy on disaster risk reduction, which committed ten per cent of emergency aid spending to the prevention of future disasters.

July

G8 St Petersburg: A disappointing summit in Russia, with little focus on global poverty.

Collapse of WTO: Talks collapsed as rich countries failed to provide a fair deal for developing nations.

August

International AIDS conference: Our staff were in Toronto to see the release of a vital Tearfund report, examining the role of the church in tackling AIDS.

October

Stern Review: The government report paints an apocalyptic scenario of 200 million refugees and a 20 per cent reduction in the global economy if urgent action is not taken.

Progress on EPAs: In an encouraging step, the UK government broke ranks with other EU members by writing an open letter to the EU Commissioner, expressing their concern regarding EPAs.

Company Law Reform Bill: With more than 100,000 people taking part this was one of the biggest campaign actions of the year. It resulted in the Companies Bill passing through Parliament, with important steps towards greater corporate responsibility.

November

I Count Rally: Around 25,000 people gathered in Trafalgar Square as part of the UK's largest ever public demonstration on climate change.

COP12 climate change conference: Our staff were in Nairobi to witness a disappointing outcome to vital climate change talks. Read their thoughts and our analysis.

Thank you for praying, sending postcards, attending events and so much more.

We are Christians passionate about the local church bringing justice and transforming lives - overcoming global poverty.
So our ten-year vision is to see 50 million people released from material and spiritual poverty through a worldwide network of 100,000 local churches.
