Carbon Fast next steps

Well done for getting to the end of the Carbon Fast! It’s great that so many people have taken part and that there has been so much interest in the media, in churches in the UK and from other organisations internationally.

Read the Carbon Fast press release here.

The Carbon Fast daily actions, downloads will be available throughout the year so do encourage your church and friends to get involved - www.tearfund.org/carbonfast

What next?

There are many ways you can continue to reduce your carbon footprint and campaign for climate change to be tackled.

Here are some ideas:

  • Lifestyle: We estimate that a household could save 727kg C02 of energy through doing the Carbon Fast actions. This results in a 25 per cent cut in average emissions over this period. Some of the actions are long lasting but others may need some persistent effort to keep going. For a reminder of what actions you can take and tips on how to do them order For Tomorrow Too, Tearfund’s free climate change booklet. You can also calculate your emissions through My Global Impact and find out how you can reduce your impact on the planet and its people.
  • Campaigning: This year is vital! Get involved in Tearfund’s campaign to call for world leaders to seal a strong a fair global deal on climate change. Find out more, take action and pray here.
  • Praying: Please continue to pray for those already being impacted by climate change; for the church in the UK as it responds to the issue and for world leaders as they work to agree a global deal on climate change.
  • Go deeper: check out our campaign resources including Bible studies and a Q&A.
  • Find out more about Tearfund - check out the home page or Make Life Flow.

Why not start by spending time with God to think about where you should start. You could also talk through ideas with your friends or family. If you are overwhelmed by the sheer number of things you could do then you could start by committing to do one or two new things a month.

International support

We're really pleased that the Carbon Fast idea has been taken up in other countries including Australia, Honduras and the US. Follow the links below to see what's happening in other countries.

Canada: KAIROS – Grand River, a local group working in support of the national organization KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives, has developed its own Carbon Fast as part of Kairos' 'Re-energise: time for a carbon sabbath' campaign. Find out more about the campaign here. Read their Carbon Fast resource.

Honduras: A number of churches and organisations got involved in the Carbon Fast during Lent 2009.

US: The Carbon Fast has been promoted in several different churches and states. In North Dakota a climate stewardship network promoted the Carbon Fast. Find out more here.

We are Christians passionate about the local church bringing justice and transforming lives - overcoming global poverty.
