Climate Change Bill

Drought in Burkina Faso happens ever more frequently. In 2005 millions faced food shortages as a result.

Take urgent action on the Climate Change Bill as it's in the final stages.

The UK Government is introducing a law to cut carbon emissions – the Climate Change Bill.

But there is a danger that the Bill is not yet strong enough to ensure the UK plays its part in keeping worldwide temperature rises below the two degrees critical point.

Poor communities are already suffering the effects of our past and current emissions - we need to do all we can now to protect their future.

Tearfund is campaigning for a stronger Bill, along with other members of the Stop Climate Chaos coalition. Here's our progress so far:

We have achieved our first victory for a strong Climate Change Bill as the Government has announced it will include annual milestones for reducing emissions. Read more here.

This success shows the Government is listening to us – our campaigning is working. But, there are still two crucial amendments we need to get our emissions under control:

  • Increase the 2050 emissions reduction target from 60%, to at least 80%
  • Include the UK’s share from international aviation and shipping in emissions reduction targets

Read our briefing on the Bill here.

Take action

Take action by contacting your MP asking them to support our demands for a stronger Bill. Many MPs have already shown support for these changes but we need more to do so as the Bill is debated in Parliament.

What do we want?

A 2°C rise in temperature is recognised as a worldwide danger limit: anything beyond this and the impact of climate change will be devastating, especially for poor people.

  1. The Bill provides for 60 per cent emission cuts on 1990 levels by 2050, but the latest science tells us we need 80 per cent emissions cuts by 2050 to play our part in keeping things below two degrees.
  2. International aviation and shipping aren't included in reduction targets. It is vital that they are. Aviation is one of the fastest growing sources of emissions.
