Global climate change deal

Take action for a global climate change deal

Climate change is devastating the lives of many poor people. Tearfund’s local church partners across the world report that crop yields are declining and disease and malnutrition are increasing.

World leaders are taking part in UN climate talks to agree a climate deal by the end of 2009. Without a strong deal, global warming may destroy millions of lives and undo decades of development work.

2009 is fast approaching and those involved in climate talks need to accelerate the pace of negotiations. Developed countries – which have contributed most to the problem – have yet to take a strong lead.

What do we want?

Tearfund is calling for the deal to

  • be agreed by the end of 2009 to ensure there is no gap between new targets and the current phase of targets in the Kyoto Protocol which will end in 2012
  • include emissions cuts for developed countries of 25-40per cent by 2020
  • generate funding of at least US$50 billion a year to help poor communities cope with the effects of climate change. Currently, much less thah this is likely to be available – just US$150-$300 million a year
Take action

Please take action by asking the UK government to secure enough money for developing countries to protect and help their poorest people, who are affected most by a changing climate.

Please pray

  • for decision makers to put the needs of poor communities first in global climate talks, particularly by making sure they get enough funding to help communities adapt to a changing climate
  • for the UK to set the pace for a global deal to be agreed by December 2009
  • for all nations, particularly the richest, to commit to making large cuts in emissions by 2020
