Fairtrade: stock it!

There are now more than 3,000 Fairtrade certified products available in the UK market.

Does your local supermarket - or local grocers - stock all the Fairtrade products you want?

In our consumer-led market, we have a right to demand products that will ensure a fair wage for producers.  We don't need to wait for enlightened shop owners and supermarket buyers to wake up to Fairtrade.

In 2007 many exciting items have been added to the list. The first Fairtrade cola, made with Fairtrade certified sugar, is currently available from www.ubuntu-trading.com, while Co-op have launched organic ale brewed with Fairtrade certified sugar from Malawi.

Have a look at what is available at www.fairtrade.org.uk

A simple and effective way to make your preference for Fairtrade known is to order a pack of 25 Stock It postcards from the Fairtrade Foundation to hand out to your friends and hand in to local shops asking to see your favourite Fairtrade products on the shelves.

Or you might want to write to your supermarket manager in a bit more detail. We have drafted a letter for you to use. Check it out here.

Tearcraft

Tearcraft isn’t about charity, it’s about dignity. Providing work that uses artisans’ skills and traditions, work that they are proud of and that allows them to provide for themselves and their families.

Tearcraft ensures that craft workers get a fair price for their skill and effort. Typically half the payment is given in advance, to allow the purchase of raw materials, so that craft workers can fund their work without having to borrow from moneylenders.
