Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

What are the Millennium Development Goals?

191 countries signed up to the Millennium Development Goals in 2000. There are eight goals which if achieved will lift 500 million people out of poverty throughout the world. The goals are:

1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger

2. Achieve universal primary education

3. Promote gender equality and empower women

4. Reduce child mortality

5. Improve maternal health

6. Combat HIV/Aids, malaria and other diseases – click here to read about Tearfund’s work on HIV/Aids

7. Ensure environmental sustainability – click here to find out about Tearfund’s Climate Change & Disasters campaign

8. Develop a global partnership for development – click here to find out about Tearfund’s Trade campaign

Blow the whistle in 2007

At the moment there is a real danger that none of these targets will be achieved, and we need to do all that we can to  keep the pressure on world leaders so that the goals become a reality. Next year is the halfway mark and there will be some major campaign events around the G8 in summer 2007.

‘In 2007, Micah Challenge will ‘blow the half time whistle’ and measure all our leaders with two yardsticks: whether they are on track at half time to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and whether they are doing what God requires, to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with him.”’ Lawrence Temfwe, Micah Challenge Facilitator, Zambia

There will be lots of “blow the whistle” events all around the world next year, and we’ll keep you updated as to how you can take part.

We are Christians passionate about the local church bringing justice and transforming lives - overcoming global poverty.
So our ten-year vision is to see 50 million people released from material and spiritual poverty through a worldwide network of 100,000 local churches.
