One third of deaths in the world - 18 million people a year or 50,000 per day - are due to poverty-related causes. That's 270 million people since 1990, the majority women and children. That's roughtly equal to the population of the US.

Disasters
People in low-income countries are four times more likely to die in natural disasters than people in high-income countries. Poverty and lack of development exacerbate people's vulnerability to extreme weather.
