Bordered by Tanzania, Sudan, Ethiopia and Somalia, Kenya is usally regarded as one of the more stable countries in East Africa. However, it is estimated that 250,000 Kenyans have been displaced and 600 killed due to unrest triggered by the disputed general election result on December 27th 2007. Approximately half of the population of Kenya is living in poverty. Corruption, HIV and AIDS, and drought are some of the major problems the country faces.
Tearfund-supported work in Kenya includes youth development, leadership training and HIV- and AIDS-awareness. Our partner organisations are also running highly successful community development programmes, in which groups of local people are encouraged to identify the problems they face and to come up with their own solutions.
