Why is Tearfund concerned about climate change?

It is our commitment to those living in poverty that has led us to work on climate change. It is becoming more evident to us that global warming is having an increasingly negative effect on the communities in which we work. Our partners are experiencing longer periods of drought, more flash floods and in many areas rainfall is becoming more unpredictable. These effects are giving rise to problems such as crop failure, an increase in water-borne diseases and migration.

As an evangelical Christian organisation upholding Biblical values, Tearfund maintains that Christians should love God by honouring him in his creation and by serving people. If we reduce the earth's biological diversity and ability to sustain its population as a result of human action, we diminish God's creation. Consequently we have a Biblical mandate to combat climate change and reduce its effects on people living in poverty.

We are Christians passionate about the local church bringing justice and transforming lives - overcoming global poverty.
So our ten-year vision is to see 50 million people released from material and spiritual poverty through a worldwide network of 100,000 local churches.
