The difference some grain makes
In the highland village of Gale Wargo, southern Ethiopia, we met grandmother Malaka Mana and her son's family. Before this latest food crisis, they were already struggling. Their main income is making and selling pots, which doesn’t bring in much money.
They have some land to grow food but their last maize harvest failed and their next harvest isn’t due for another three months. The October harvest in 2007 also failed, so they have been surviving on one meal a day since then, when normally they would enjoy two. Their ox and two cows died because of the drought.
The children are still and quiet, lacking the energy to run around. Malaka Mana says, ‘Look at us. We are not in a position to give the children enough to eat.’ Her son has been taking part in Tearfund partner the Woliatta Kale Heywet Church food-for-work scheme. This DVD shows Malaka receiving a sack of grain, payment for her son’s work. Click play to begin film.
