Give us strength

When Liz Jennings joined a Transform trip to Kolkata, she knew she was going to see things that she doesn’t normally come across on the cobbled lanes of Lymington in the New Forest.

But the story of the Good Samaritan took on a whole new spin when Liz and her group came across an old woman lying naked in the street. ‘She was ignored by everyone, as if she were a piece of waste paper’, says Liz, in an audio diary she records the very next day.

‘For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink…I needed clothes and you clothed me….I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these, you did for me.’

(Matthew 25:34-40)

‘As Mother Teresa said, “It’s not about doing great things, but about doing small things with great love.” We bought the woman a T-shirt and some pants from a nearby stall. We got her a drink and some bananas, and an umbrella to shelter from the monsoon. That woman changed from someone distraught to someone able to smile with a wide, gummy smile.’
