Alive - providing hope in HIV
If we can grasp our potential to affect change, as part of the worldwide church, preventing the spread of HIV can be a reality.
This is the challenge of the 2008 HIV campaign Alive.
‘ARVs are a gift of God,’ says a local church volunteer – as she explains how ARV medicines changed the way the church in Gondola District, Mozambique, responded to HIV.
Before, local church volunteers helped people to die with dignity. Now they help them to live.
With volunteer support and proper nutrition, ARV medicines can give people living in poverty with HIV up to 20 years more of life. And the church here, in the UK and Ireland, is playing a key part in this.
It’s a simple equation: the church in the UK and Ireland supported Tearfund. Tearfund supported local church volunteer Lurdes. Lurdes supported Berta, a mother with HIV, and enabled her to access ARV medicines. Berta regained strength and is now able to support her children again.
That’s the miracle of God’s church in action – a simple equation helping to solve complex problems.
