Working together to show God’s love through action in our community

Tearfund offers two training and development processes, Church, Community and Change, and Discovery, that provide the structure and support to enable your church to respond to the needs of your community. Read more about them below.

We'd love to hear what you think about this new section of the website for churches, if you have a moment, could you fill in this questionnaire? or alternatively you could email your comments to churches@tearfund.org.

Church, Community and Change

Engaging your church in your local community involves seeking to meet the needs of vulnerable people in your area, but it can also mean challenging attitudes and values within your church.

The Church, Community and Change process, through the support of an experienced external Facilitator, enables churches to:

  • build relationships with the community and identify local needs by listening and doing research
  • motivate and envision church members to get involved and to serve their communities
  • where appropriate, plan and implement a community initiative that is fully supported by church members and the local community
  • deal with any issues that arise as they begin to engage with the community. e.g. beliefs, attitudes, fears, prejudices
  • work through the internal changes required if they are going to be effective in the community

The process may take between nine and eighteen months. A coordinating team, made up of church members, will communicate with the church, liaise with the Tearfund Facilitator and run activities from the Church, Community and Change manuals.

The manuals include a step-by-step guide to the process, advice, case studies, training activities and over forty bible studies.

If you would like to know how to get involved please download our Church, Community and Change booklet in PDF format here.
