How to apply

Photo: Jim Loring/Tearfund
Emma spent four weeks in Kenya with Tearfund partner FOCUS.
Here's your step-by-step guide to joining a programme.

1.  Print off and fill in the appropriate application form, and pass on the reference forms to your referees. Click here for PDF documents. Applicants must be based in the UK or have a UK base/address and also must be aged 18 and by the date of travel.

2. Contact your referees. Ask your pastor or church leader to complete and return to us one reference form. The other should be completed and returned to us by a work/educational referee or a longstanding personal friend. We need these returned to us before we can offer you a place.

3. Send in the application form together with both references, two passport photos, a black and white photocopy of the photo page from your passport and a £50 deposit (Non refundable). Please make cheques payable to Tearfund.

Make sure you get your application in on time!

4.  Await confirmation of receipt of your application and an invitation to the selection/orientation events and then confirm that you can come.

5.  Once the selection/orientation event has been held, we will contact you to say whether we can offer you a place on the programme (this is provisional and subject to medical clearance).

At the orientation we will give you a detailed preparation pack, telling you all you need to know and do to get ready to go.

6. To confirm your place on the programme, you need to send us a further deposit of £800 (again this is non-refundable) after the orientation to pay for your incountry costs as well as the orientation you've just had amongst other costs. You must tell us if you decide not to travel.

7.  Do everything required in order to get ready (checklist and dates given in Preparation Pack).

8.  Pay the balance of your trip one month prior to departure.

9.   Change lives: yours and other people's.
