How we work

We are recognised for our professional expertise in development, disaster response, disaster risk reduction and advocacy. This level of professionalism and expertise, matched with the enduring, sustainable effectiveness of the local church, is a powerful force in the face of poverty. We are committed to standards of conduct and good practice that ensure we are always accountable for the work we do. We are signatories to the Red Cross Code of Conduct and members of the Humanitarian Accountability Partnership. You can read more about our standards and commitments here.

Core to our Christian values is the belief that aid must be given regardless of race, religion, nationality or gender, and that it will never be used to further a particular political or religious standpoint. This is of vital importance to us, because God’s love is for everyone, and this is the kind of ‘development work’ the Bible describes. We follow the biblical mandate that helping communities in need is central to the purpose of local churches, wherever they are. You can find out more about why this is important to us here.

We’re also committed to ensuring that as much as possible of the money that supporters give us is spent in ways that really benefit the people who need it. For every pound you give, approximately 91 pence goes to our emergency, development and humanitarian work, as well as other elements of our charitable work such as campaigning and advocacy. Approximately eight pence is spent raising funds (which compares well with similar organisations) and less than one penny in every pound on costs of governance. All our spending is overseen by the Charity Commission, which regulates all of Britain’s charities.
