We've got a great opportunity for you to volunteer in Colombia with Tearfund for one month, alongside our partner CORSOC.

CORSOC have over 20 years of experience, running projects that get whole communities involved, helping them to develop and be sustainable for the future. Many of their projects are run in remote and hard to reach locations and are having an amazing impact on local communities.

CORSOC run a Sports for Life project. They have set up sports clubs throughout Barranquilla and Cartagena, for children and young people. Boys and girls get to play safe and enjoyable sports outside of school hours, but they also get support for studies from a personal tutor and have the opportunity to learn about Jesus.

There is also the incredible Uniting Voices, Weaving Hope project that trains local churches in Cordoba, Montes de Maria, Bolivar, Atlantico, Magdalena and Sucre, equipping them with tools and resources to assist the emotional, spiritual and physical recovery of women who have experienced sexual violence. Alongside providing advice and support, the network also campaigns to raise awareness and build healthy relationships between men and women.

A third programme, Youth Towards a Better Life seeks to support young people aged between 14 - 17, in the Los Angeles neighbourhood of Barranquilla who are involved with gangs and taking illegal substances. The project provides opportunities for young people to seek an alternative life, equipping them with education, opportunities to learn about microenterprise and management training through a local technological college.

CORSOC also run emergency projects, supporting families and elderly people affected by flooding in the six small village communities of Condoto, Andagoya, Suruco, Bebedo, Encharca and Primavera.

These communities are located in some of the poorest areas that receive little support from government agencies. Through the projects, CORSOC provide essential resources - medical care and medicine and train local church and community leaders to help them support their communities in becoming more resilient to disasters.

So, are you ready?

A month in Colombia will both challenge you personally and stretch your faith. You will experience how the local church is at the heart of tackling poverty and injustice and have the chance to show God’s love in practical ways as you visit and learn from inspirational communities.

Who are we looking for?

Individuals who are flexible and adaptable and would love the chance to spend a month living in Colombia, working in a team, alongside other volunteers and CORSOC staff.

Colombia is a Spanish speaking country so a knowledge of some Spanish is an advantage. We ask all team leaders to be conversational in Spanish.

What will you be doing?

  • Supporting young people from the local community in the Youth Towards a Better Life project
  • Leading sports activities at the Sports for Life project
  • Running bible holiday clubs for local children
  • Running English lessons.
  • Participating in the life of the local church, including attending church services, teaching at the Sunday School and participating in Bible studies

Feedback

Spending 7 weeks in Brazil was amazing. It broadened my horizons and introduced me to a new way of doing church, life and worshipping God. We met some incredible people and did some amazing things. We could see people’s lives changed by the work of ACEV and Tearfund.

I experienced an amazing country with truly incredible people who are not limited by their material poorness but are genuinely welcoming and generous to all. It was definitely the start of something through which I hope to return the favour to those who have taught me so much.
