‘Life in the country is increasingly difficult,’ says Miguel. A changing climate, increasing crop failure and falling returns from the land have all collided to place the community of Cajamarca under even greater pressure. It makes Miguel’s work with Tearfund partner Warmis even more significant.
By teaching better farming techniques and helping women and children train in skills that will generate reliable, sustainable incomes in the future, Miguel has a clear sense of calling. ‘It is God’s work we are doing,’ he says, and he’s right.
Miguel, his wife and two children are more than temporary aid workers or well-meaning enablers. They are a perfect example of what happens when Christians decide to live sacrificially, in community, with a heart to serve God by reaching out to the poor.
Speaking of the communities he works with, Miguel’s aim is that ‘in time they will become completely self-sufficient.’ Until that day, we have the privilege of supporting and seeing God’s work in action.
