‘We can’t go on without the word of God,’ says Olga. For most grandmothers in their seventies this would be a remarkable thing to hear. But for Olga, the words are hauntingly true. Each morning she wakes, lights the fire, cooks and then starts work in the fields, trying to tease the crops from tired soil. But time is running out and a lifetime of hard work has left her ill, weakened and frustrated as she fears losing the battle to support herself. So when she speaks of needing God to sustain her, she means it.
Olga and her seventy-two-year-old husband live in Cajamarca. She fears being alone and wonders at times ‘when will God take me to him?’ But Olga is not giving up, and her faith remains strong and defiant. ‘We can’t go on without the word of God,’ she says.
While we cannot control the rains, the local church has been able to offer Olga and her family vital, reliable, practical and spiritual help. They have helped overcome some of the problems with the land, and are committed to being the answer to her prayers for support and company. As we follow their journey we can be more than just observers - we can become part of the wider church family cheering Olga on, praying for her and supporting her as her prayers continue to be answered.
