A Christmas blessing

30 November

For many around the world, the Advent season is a time of hope, joy and celebration.

One family in Nepal have particular reason to be thankful at Christmas time. Uma and her thirteen-year-old daughter, Puspa, live in a village near Tikapur in western Nepal. Three years ago in late December, Uma was seriously ill in bed, unable to move with a high fever.

Puspa heard carol singers from a nearby church singing outside. She had heard Christians could heal and so she begged them to come in. They came in and prayed for Uma and amazingly when they left she threw off her blanket – she was completely healed! Now Uma and and Puspa follow Jesus. (We) ‘Thank God for healing my mother at Christmas and thank him for how he has come into our lives,’ says Puspa.

Tearfund’s partner Sagoal works in western Nepal and has seen the transformation, not just in Uma and Puspa’s family but across the entire region. Uma and Puspa are part of the 900-strong group of believers in the area, an incredible growth from just two believers thirty years ago. Working with Tearfund, their local church in Tikapur has mobilised their community, in particular providing Uma with a pig – a much needed sustainable source of income.

Sagoal offers training, advice and support to Tikapur’s church work with communities like Shivnagar and the community is reaping God’s blessings. (I) ‘Thank God for all he has done for me and Puspa - and for bringing the church to my community to share the love of Jesus with us.’ Uma says.

Please join the church in Tikapur, Nepal, in giving thanks for transformation and hope this Christmas. You can order Tearfund's First Christmas pack at www.tearfund.org/christmas  and find prayer resources to use during your services.

  • Praise God for the growth of the Tikapur church and for all the believers in it. Thank God for healing Uma and for the faith that she and Puspa share. Pray that God will continue to provide for their needs.
  •  ‘The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.’ (John 1.5) Praise God that at Christmas time, the redemptive light of humanity came to us in the form of Jesus, and that now, however desperate and dark things may be throughout the world, they will never overcome God’s holy light.
