Celebrating transformation this harvest

16 September 2011

During this season of harvest we are celebrating how local churches are becoming catalysts in meeting the physical as well as spiritual needs of communities across the world.

Through Tearfund’s church and community mobilisation process, churches are learning to identify skills and resources within their communities, so that self-sufficiency is boosted and dependence on outside help is reduced.

For Pastor Achibu Joseph, from Ogongura village, Uganda, the knowledge has been life transforming. ‘Life was very miserable before – the church did not even have benches for sitting on. People did not respect the church or see its value so they didn’t want it to be here.’

Now many of those who opposed the church are members. ‘People are happy and feel very hopeful. It has become easy for the church to generate resources – like food – through our meetings,’ enthuses Pastor Joseph.

Please join the church in Ogongura, Uganda, in praying for the work of the church in overcoming poverty. You can order Tearfund's We are Church harvest resource at www.tearfund.org/harvest and find prayer resources to use during your services.

  • Please pray for Pastor Joseph and the residents of Ogongora as they take on new challenges such as improving roads and the quality of housing.
  • Pray that God will touch congregations in the UK as they learn how they can play a key role in preventing food crises and beating back global poverty this harvest time.
  • Pray for the many churches participating in Tearfund’s church and community mobilisation process: that the activities inspired will bring lasting change.
