Around ten million people in parts of East Africa are facing severe hunger as the worst drought in 60 years destroys crops and livestock.
A lethal mix of drought, failed harvests and high food prices is bringing misery across the region: south east Ethiopia is the hardest hit area, with 3.2 million farming-dependent people experiencing a food crisis, while 3.2 million others are affected in northern Kenya and 2.5 million in Somalia.
This crisis is another blow to a region that has been hit by a succession of climatic challenges, notably in 2009, when years of failed rains and harvests left 20 million people facing life-threatening food and water shortages.
- Please pray God’s strength for those affected by the food crisis in East Africa and for the drought conditions to ease.
- Pray for urgency among international donors so a quick response can prevent more hardship and suffering.
- Pray for wisdom for Tearfund partners working to respond and build the resilience of communities.
