East Africa crisis deepens

21 July 2011

Earlier this week, the United Nations described the worsening situation in parts of Somalia as a ‘famine’ – a term only cautiously used in development circles.

In southern Somalia, an estimated 2.8 million people are highly vulnerable. Tearfund is partnering with World Concern to meet critical needs near the border with Kenya. In the face of acute drought, the project aims to supply 3,000 people with 20 litres of water a day for three months. This will help them survive until rains arrive and replenish wells and reservoirs.

Somalia’s plight is part of a much wider food crisis affecting millions of people across the Horn of Africa region.

  • Please pray with One Voice for families who are lacking food and water.
  • Pray for World Concern and other Tearfund partners across the Horn of Africa: for wisdom and stamina to identify and help those most in need.
  • Pray for Tearfund’s advocacy team as they lobby the UK government and the G20 to address the root causes of the food crisis, such as rising global food prices, climate change and lack of investment in small-scale farming.

Tearfund supporters have already given more than £1 million to ease suffering. If you would like to donate a gift, please click here
