Sarah is a 36-year-old Ugandan living with HIV who has terminal cancer. The cancer of the cervix caused her to bleed profusely and led to her husband kicking her out of the matrimonial home.
Two years ago, she received radiotherapy treatment which stopped the bleeding but she is now bedridden with back troubles. But helped by Tearfund Inspired Individual Steven Watiti, Sarah has found a new home.
Steven is urging churches to pray for Sarah and people like her who are suffering hardship and social isolation because of their HIV status.
‘I would like Tearfund to help us to pray for funding given the current economic financial crisis,’ says Steven. ‘The future of HIV/AIDS funding seems bleak and people are dying. Countries are not taking shared responsibility in the response.’
Coaching and fellowship
Steven spends much of his time advocating for people living with HIV to those in authority, but he recognises the sustaining power of prayer.
Inspired Individuals are people selected for their visionary work with poor communities. Tearfund provides nearly 40 such individuals with practical and spiritual support that includes mentoring, coaching, training, fellowship and financial assistance.
- Please pray in solidarity for people living with HIV because many of them are caught up in the vicious cycle of HIV and poverty.
- Food shortages, caused by high prices, are hampering the effectiveness of antiretroviral drugs which need a well balanced diet to work properly. Pray that HIV treatments will not be undermined by a lack of nutrition.
- Pray for increased HIV treatment funding by the international community and for more investment in HIV and health as a whole.
- Ask the Lord to bless the ministries of all Tearfund Inspired Individuals and to give them a strong sense of his presence.
