Project IMPACT is a Tearfund partner that stands for Inter-Mission Prevention of AIDS through Care and Training.
Working with HIV and AIDS victims in five Mumbai slums, they mobilise the church, care for people living on the streets, and educate the public in their response to the HIV pandemic.
IMPACT has been working in destitute areas for 16 years, offering care and support to men, women, children and transgender people living with HIV. Now, their work has grown to directly benefit over 8,000 people. Part of their work includes a year- long community training course while a separate training programme contains a spiritual dimension for interested churches. The training offers counselling and education to conquer the fear of diagnosis, disclosure and discrimination with encouraging results – now three HIV support groups that meet monthly are models of best practice to other charitable organisations.
Project IMPACT works hard to restore dignity and hope to those living with HIV, as well as addressing gender imbalance at the root of much HIV transmission. Future plans are to encourage students on the Community Training Course to become trailblazers in tackling the pandemic – making a difference, caring and fighting for the most destitute Mumbai slum dwellers with HIV and AIDS.
-
Pray that the success in tackling the HIV and AIDS crisis in Mumbai would be replicated across India.
-
Pray that churches working in the slums wouldn’t close their eyes and minds to the complex issues surrounding HIV, but would instead become part of the solution.
-
Give thanks for the work IMPACT is doing, restoring dignity and transforming lives among those most in need. Pray such work will continue to flourish in Jesus’ name.
