Tearfund partners honoured

11 November 2011

Lyn Lusi has been awarded the prestigious Opus Prize, which recognises the work of faith-based organisations in solving persistent social problems in their communities.

Lyn is co-founder (with husband Dr Jo Lusi) of Tearfund partner HEAL Africa, an organisation working to transform individuals and communities shattered by conflict and gender violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Among other achievements, HEAL Africa has performed more than 1,500 post-rape fistula repair surgeries, provided primary care and counselling to more than 40,000 women, established 31 Safe Houses, trained 90,000 community activists in HIV/AIDS prevention and care, and funded more than 1,500 micro grants to families.

Meanwhile, Tearfund partner the Diocese of Kigezi, has been named as the best performing Ugandan NGO in the area of water and sanitation by the country’s Ministry of Water and Environment.

In rural south-west Uganda, the partner has brought clean water and improved sanitation facilities to tens of thousands of people. Great emphasis is placed on Water User Committees, which encourage local communities to contribute their own labour to the construction and upkeep of the facilities.

A source from the Diocese asked Tearfund staff and supporters to ‘rejoice with us as we humbly seek God’s guidance as we continue in his service’.

  • Please give thanks that HEAL Africa and the Diocese of Kigezi’s work has been recognised: pray that this positive publicity and encouragement will enable them to reach more people.
  • Pray for Lyn Lusi: that God will strengthen her as she raises awareness of HEAL Africa’s work internationally and seeks to make the very best use of incoming resources to bring physical, emotional and spiritual healing.
  • Pray for Diocese of Kigezi staff as they look for even more effective ways to serve local communities in south-west Uganda.
  • Pray for Tearfund partners across the world whose work rarely makes the headlines but who glorify God with their compassion and perseverance.
