In a country where millions of people live in extreme poverty, self-help groups are a low cost solution that is proven to work. When Meseret heard that her local church had set up a self-help group she went along hoping for a hand out. What she found instead was a group of 17 women and a facilitator.
Groups like this are bringing about a movement of change across Ethiopia – a country synonymous with poverty and need.
Senait is an active self-help group member, she tells us how her dream to provide pre-school education to children in her community resulted in a school being built and staffed. Free places are available for the poorest children.
