‘I can’t express in words what my group means to me. I was able to completely transform my life and give my daughters a better future.’ Meseret
Meseret’s voice can now be heard. She is generating an income for the first time and giving her daughters the education that they deserve.
Tearfund has set up 12,000 thriving self-help groups in Ethiopia through the local church. With your help we’d like to start up 500 new groups, transforming the lives of 42,500 people. In a country where millions of people live in extreme poverty, self-help groups are a low cost solution that is proven to work.
'We had nothing. I struggled to breastfeed my baby because I was so hungry.'
When Meseret heard that her local church had set up a self-help group she went along hoping for a hand out. What she found instead was a group of 17 women and a facilitator.
Groups like this are bringing about a movement of change across Ethiopia – a country synonymous with poverty and need.
Learn more here about Senait, who tells her story of the effectiveness of self-help groups to benefit both individuals and the wider community.
It’s a movement forging social bonds, nurturing confidence, and growing financial know-how and opportunity.
If 500 people give £10 a month, we could start up 500 new groups, lifting 42,500 people out of poverty.
