Tearfund response to UK Government International Development Select Committee
"Today’s report from the International Development Committee on the post-2015 development goals rightly welcomes the Prime Minister’s commitment to ‘getting to zero’ on extreme poverty.
"For the first time in human history, this ambitious goal is now achievable.
"We've come a long way and we've solved some difficult problems, and now it's time to tackle some more. We mustn't ignore the daily threat to people's lives and livelihoods: climate change.
"We now have a once in a generation opportunity to eradicate poverty and build a sustainable future, where changing weather patterns don't cost people's lives and everyone can produce enough to feed their families.
"When the current goals expire in 2015, the remaining challenges humanity will face are hard to solve and very complicated. If they were easy, we'd have sorted them by now. It'll take stronger political will and drive from every nation - high, low and middle income - to adopt ambitious and achievable targets to reduce carbon emissions, invest in green growth and make better quality services available to everyone."
