UPDATE: Hunger crisis in East Africa

In March we joined with the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) to launch the East Africa Crisis Appeal.

With 16 million people facing starvation and in urgent need of food, water and medical treatment the DEC have so far raised £50 million. We’re so grateful that £3 million of this has come from Tearfund supporters like you.

The crisis has been brought on by drought and conflict. Famine has been declared in parts of South Sudan and is close to being a reality again in Somalia.

In Kenya, the government has declared a national emergency. And in Ethiopia there is a new wave of drought following the strongest El Nino weather on record.

Women, children and older people are particularly vulnerable – more than 800,000 children under five are severely malnourished.

Saving lives

Tearfund is working through church partners and Christian development organisations in South Sudan, Kenya, Ethiopia and Somaliland, and their first hand reports of the need have been sobering to hear. We also have Tearfund staff providing lifesaving nutrition at feeding centres to mothers and their malnourished children.

In a visit to a Tearfund feeding centre, Josie Smith, Tearfund’s South Sudan Programme Officer, met women who had walked many miles to bring their children. 'I was really touched by the determination of mothers in South Sudan to see their children survive,' says Josie.

Prayer focus:

• Lift up in prayer all those who are facing starvation in South Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia.

• Thank God for the generosity of Tearfund supporters in giving to the East Africa Crisis Appeal.

• Pray for the Tearfund staff and partners who will be making sure the funds raised will be used where the need is greatest.
