Day 21 – A firm foundation

Approximately 1-minute read

‘The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.’ (Genesis 2:15)

This Christmas, please pray for the safety of others around the world, like Lamuchi and his family.

Climate change is a serious concern for all of us and Bangladesh is one of the most disaster-affected countries in the world, with millions of people crammed into low-lying, flood-prone land. The rising sea level, monsoon rains and an increasing number of severe cyclones are destroying homes, ruining crops and wrecking lives.

Lamuchi is a fisherman struggling to provide food for his family and an education for his children. The constant flooding has made his job dangerous and there just aren’t enough fish in the waters anymore. He also had the traumatic experience of watching his house disappear in a giant flood.

Thanks to the generous giving of Tearfund supporters, Lamuchi now has a house with a concrete base rather than a traditional clay one – which makes it much safer when the floods come. He explains: ‘When the water level rises, this concrete foundation of my house is not damaged at all. There is much flow of water here, but this concrete foundation can protect itself. It can't be damaged by water as there are no holes inside it.’

Please watch our Christmas film to see more from Bangladesh.

A prayer for creation:

God of creation,
God who declared over the world ‘it is good, it is good, it is good’,
Thank you for the gift of this Earth.
For its wonder and its beauty.
For the way it sustains us.
For all the diverse life upon it.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.

At this time of great need and urgency,
we pray for your kingdom to come.
We pray for world leaders to wake up
and see the need for immediate action.
We pray that industries that are polluting the world
will start to put people before profits.
And we pray that we will all recognise the need
to care for this amazing Earth.

Most of all, we pray for all those who are suffering now
because of the climate crisis –
bring comfort, bring protection, bring relief.

In Jesus’ name, amen.
