Think climate change is years away?

Climate change has reached a state of emergency and we can’t afford to think of it as a distant threat. It’s here, wreaking damage and misery – particularly on the lives of the world’s poorest people, pushing them back into poverty.

This is not God's plan – but you can be part of the solution. With your support, Tearfund’s worldwide network of churches and partners can provide the tools and techniques that communities need to adapt and prepare for the effects of the climate crisis.

‘Disaster is always with us’

Last year, 5.5 million people’s lives were devastated by flooding, including Juliet from Bangladesh. ‘When the river floods, it washes everything away,’ she says. The climate crisis is causing more extreme weather events like this.

Juliet’s community in Kalapara on the exposed southern coast is largely dependent on fishing, but cyclones and floods are causing devastation – destroying boats and making the fish scarce. Now, poverty is on the increase again in her community.

Since her husband had a stroke, Juliet has been the family’s sole breadwinner, supporting him and their two children, her father-in-law and her young niece. She makes her living from working in the community and her paddy field, which has been regularly flooded out.

‘Disaster is always with us,’ Juliet told us. ‘We are living with it and trying to manage our livelihoods. Disaster is making us financially poor.’

But now, Tearfund’s local church partner are equipping Juliet and her community with the tools and techniques that they need to adapt to current conditions and prepare for future disasters.

These include more resilient housing; tree planting to protect against flooding; early warning systems; and training in skills like emergency first aid and search and rescue.
