What is happening in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)?

Decades of violent conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have resulted in an urgent humanitarian crisis. Millions of people have been forced to flee their homes to escape the violence, and are living in temporary camps.

In an already desperate situation, recent fighting in the city of Goma means families who are still traumatised from losing their homes are being forced to flee once again.

  • Since the start of January, hundreds of thousands of people in the DRC have fled their homes.
  • An estimated 3,000 people have been killed and 2,800 injured in recent fighting in and around Goma.
  • People in Goma spent a number of days without electricity, water or internet access.
  • Essential services such as healthcare facilities, schools and markets have been attacked, and banks have closed down. Hospitals are struggling to cope.

People who have already lost so much are fearing for their lives. You can show them God’s love by responding to this urgent crisis.

Please donate to provide life-saving aid to people in the DRC.

How is Tearfund responding?

We’re determined to keep serving those in greatest need who are affected by this crisis. Our work in the DRC receives some significant support from the US government, but their overseas funding review has increased the challenges for the Tearfund team who are responding. This means a donation from you right now is even more urgent and impactful.

Our staff and partners are currently:

  • Distributing clean water and hygiene supplies to people living in temporary camps, schools and churches.
  • Setting up multiple water points so people have easier access to clean water.
  • Distributing cash to help people buy food and other essential items.

We are extremely concerned about the situation and want to scale up our work so that we can reach even more people in desperate need.

‘People should be safe. They've fled from conflict and now they are targets of more violence.’
Poppy Anguandia, Tearfund Country Director for DRC
