Welcome to the Central African Republic (CAR), where you are helping families overcome the impact of conflict.

Welcome

Since its independence in 1960, the Central African Republic (CAR) has experienced instability and conflict. Nearly 600,000 people have been internally displaced as a result of the ongoing violence and more are in need of humanitarian aid. Despite these seemingly overwhelming circumstances, your support is still reaching families in greatest need.

Faithful regular givers, like you, are making a World of Difference, helping families whose lives have been upturned by conflict to get back on their feet.

Watch this video for a warm welcome to CAR from Tearfund's Romaric Gounsem - come and see the difference you're making.

How your support transforms lives

Where is CAR?

The Central African Republic is a landlocked country that is bordered by Chad, Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of the Congo and Cameroon.

Your impact in CAR

Restoring shattered dreams

Your support is helping pick up the pieces of broken ambitions…

A woman smiles and crosses her arms, in front of her is the handle bars of a small motorbike.

Thanks to generous supporters, Flora from the Central African Republic is planning to train to be a health worker.

Prone to coups, rebellions and ethnic violence, CAR has been engulfed in conflict for more than twenty years. Amidst the violence and instability, innocent people like Flora are simply trying to survive. But your support is enabling families like hers to achieve so much more.

‘When I was young, I wanted to become a doctor,’ says Flora, now 36 and living in the town of Mbaïki in the Lobaye region. ‘My family was doing well and my father, a teacher, provided all we needed.’

But tragedy struck when her father died, while Flora was still at school. ‘I no longer had anyone to support me and pay my school fees. I had to leave school and got married shortly after.’

While Flora was happy with her loving husband and six children, life was still a struggle. ‘I was not doing well,’ she says. ‘I wasn’t able to take care of my family. I was often sick. I didn’t feel well because we didn't have anything.

‘So I started my own small business. But because I didn’t understand how to run it, it was a struggle. I could not make enough to support my family.’

With her dreams of becoming a doctor lost and without the skills and knowledge to support her family, it seemed the cycle of poverty would be passed to the next generation. But today, Flora says ‘thank you’ for helping her. ‘I am very happy, I can say that I am a complete woman thanks to Tearfund.’

Several women are sat in a circle outside on wooden chairs and benches.

Flora meets regularly with her self-help group who are supporting her with loans to start small businesses

Flora’s life and prospects changed when she joined a Tearfund-supported self-help group. Self-help groups enable people, especially those with lower incomes, to save money together. Members can also borrow back with low interest for things like school costs or starting a business. But these groups are about more than just money.

‘I love the solidarity in our group,’ says Flora. ‘It’s not just about meeting to save together, we support one another in good times and difficult times.’

Through the fellowship of her self-help group and training in business skills and soap making, Flora has started several successful ventures. She now sells peanuts, food, soaps, and farms livestock. She’s also bought a motorcycle for her husband, a plot of land for farming and pays for her children to go to school.

‘I don't want my children to suffer like I did. That's why I'm working hard for my family. Because I’ve suffered a lot. I want my children to have a better tomorrow. My husband loves everything I do. He encourages me to work even harder to achieve my dreams.’

Flora has set up several successful income-generating activities including making and selling soap

‘I am thankful to God for everything that I have. I want to go back to school and become a health worker. With that knowledge, I will be able to take care of my family and community if they get sick. I’ll have to study for three years to get the certificate.

‘I trust in God and believe that by putting him in the centre of my life and everything I do, I’ll go far and inspire others. Thank you! I am asking everyone to join hands so that we can move forward. May God bless everyone.’

Thank you for your faithful regular gifts. This is just one example of how you are enabling whole-life transformation, not just for individuals but for whole families and entire communities.

‘I am thankful to God for everything that I have.’

Business beyond borders

Gina, aged 35, who also lives in Bambari, has restarted a shop thanks to the training provided by generous supporters like you. She shares her story of how your support is making a huge difference to families like hers in the Central African Republic…

‘I started my business before the war broke out. Back then, we could get goods from other regions. Everything changed after the conflict. I had to stop trading. But, thanks to Tearfund, I was able to start again.

‘Tearfund helped our church start a savings group. They trained us how to run it and gave us business skills. Thanks to a loan from the group, I was able to restart my shop. That means I can earn money to support my family. We've started to grow crops as part of our group activities. We hope to continue to develop our farm together.

A woman smiles and leans over a bowl of produce, around her are more buckets and bowls.

The business skills training Gina has learnt is making her shop even more successful

‘My husband doesn’t have a regular job, he just does odd jobs for people. But when he doesn’t have any, I provide support as best I can by selling my goods at the local market. I make a living from my small business and farming. My life is more stable now. Because I earn money, I can pay the fees and my children can go to school.

‘My aim is to become a bigger trader in the future. I want to expand my business and travel to Bangui, the capital city. And travel across the border, why not?

‘I want my children to live well. I'd love it if they helped the community, had a good career and lived happy, safe and well. I am very thankful for the support we received from Tearfund. May God fill you with grace and favour.'

Your prayers and giving are equipping local churches in communities across the world to help families in the midst of conflict. Poverty is not God's plan. You are. Thank you.
