Welcome

Nestled in the peaks of the Himalayas, Nepal is a nation of rich traditions. However, many remote communities still face the realities of a fragile environment and economic hardship.

Your faithful support is a lifeline for these families. Working alongside local churches, your donations deliver essential, life-transforming solutions such as equipping communities with sustainable livelihoods and keeping women and girls safe from abuse.

Your impact in Nepal

The community that saved a school

Your gifts are inspiring communities to tackle local issues, such as making sure children can go to school safely.

Suman, age 9, outside his local primary school in rural Nepal.

‘If the school closed, I’d have to walk two hours to another school,’ says Suman, 9, a pupil at his local primary school. ‘I’d have to cross a river and climb a hill. It’s very far.’

Suman’s home is in Sindhupalchok in rural Nepal, near the border with Tibet. ‘It’s a high-risk area,’ says Chandra, the local community leader. ‘We are particularly prone to landslides. People live in danger every day. In our community, families have lost homes and people have died.’

The possibility of a four-hour daily trek across hills and mountains for young children like Suman is a significant risk.

‘The school was in a critical condition,’ Chandra explains. ‘Many pupils had to walk far to other schools.’ At that time there was just one teacher for the whole village, who was struggling to teach every subject to every child. ‘The government and local authorities have not given us enough support.’

With the school under threat of closure and no outside help, it seemed likely that children like Suman would have to risk their lives every day, just to get an education. It was time for the community to step up and fill the gap…

The change started when Chandra and members of his community took part in Tearfund’s Transforming Communities training. ‘We learnt about healthy families, community and society. We also learned that if someone in the village is struggling, the community must support them.’ That's why Chandra realised the school children needed their help and decided to step in.

‘We brought in another teacher, Jharana [see below], supported by our community so that more children could study at the school. This stopped them from making risky journeys. Even though our contribution was small, we supported the school and kept it running. Many people prayed for this.’

For Suman, it means he’s just a short walk away from an education that can change his future. ‘I like to learn Nepali, English and Maths,’ he says. ‘I enjoy coming to school. I like to practice handwriting, colouring and playing games.’ But not every part of school life is as enjoyable. ‘Sometimes they make us dance. I do not like dancing.’

Despite the dancing, overall it’s been a blessing for Suman. ‘I am very happy here because the teachers love me and speak kindly to me.’

Your faithful, regular gifts are bringing about whole-life transformation, not only for children like Suman but for entire families and communities. Thank you so much.

Music from skins and strings

Enjoy this Nepali musician playing a Tungna, a traditional, plucked string instrument from the Himalayan region. It’s carved from a single piece of wood with a hollow body covered in animal skin and is primarily used in local folk music. Musicians play the instrument while welcoming the new year, celebrating the harvest, and during social gatherings.

The musician, Bisai, is a local artisan who crafted this instrument using traditional tools like the khukuri. He is seen playing a traditional Tamang folk melody on the instrument, which he has decorated with vibrant white, green, blue and red pigments.

Bisai is a neighbour of Kanya, a participant in Tearfund’s Women’s Economic Empowerment project. Kanya, a survivor of trafficking, found support through this initiative to rebuild her life.

A second chance for our school

Jharana, a teacher at Shree Kunii Gaun Primary School, is committed to supporting children’s needs. Supported by her local community and Tearfund’s Transforming Communities training, she helped to revive her school.

‘The school was in a bad way. It was close to shutting down,’ says Jharana. ‘After praying and seeking God’s guidance, I felt in my heart that I should do something for this school. So I decided to come and teach.

‘We started new teaching methods and introduced more interesting activities for the children.

Jharana has started noticing improvements in pupil’s confidence.

‘It has been about nine to ten months since I started teaching at this school. Right now, I am teaching 15 small children. In the beginning, the students were weak in their studies and not very active during activities.

‘After we began using different teaching methods, we started seeing changes. Their studies improved, their behaviour improved, and they became more confident and open.’

Your generosity is transforming lives in Nepal by empowering communities to support struggling families. Thank you.
