World of Difference

Welcome to Uganda, where you're helping families find their inner strength and lift themselves out of poverty.

Welcome

Poverty in Uganda is a complex issue with significant inequality between rural and urban areas, where a large proportion live below the poverty line. Limited access to quality education and healthcare, reliance on poor agricultural practices, and the impact of the climate crisis are significant challenges. However, your support continues to reach families in greatest need, despite the seemingly overwhelming circumstances.

Faithful regular givers, like you, are making a World of Difference, helping families to overcome the cycles of poverty that have hampered them for generations.

Watch this video for a warm welcome to Uganda from Tina - come and see the difference you’re making.

How your support transforms lives

Where is Uganda?

Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa, bordered by Kenya, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Tanzania.

Your impact in Uganda

Building on the rock

Your support is helping people realise that they have the keys to unlock poverty…

Thanks to Transforming communities training, Tina has started her own rock quarrying business.

Rural poverty in Uganda is deeply entrenched, with a majority of low-income families living in rural areas. Parents like Tina rely heavily on small-scale farming and are extremely vulnerable to climate shocks. But your support means you’re enabling families like hers to break that cycle and provide for their children.

‘My husband died in 2019, and I was left on my own,’ says Tina from Kaabong district in Northern Uganda. ‘I stayed home, worrying about how to raise my kids and teach them to be independent. I felt hopeless and constantly stressed about money.

‘I felt trapped in that tiny house – it was never meant to be permanent. I was always alone, just me and my kids, sitting around. I had no friends, no job... just loneliness.

‘I had no hope for my children’s future, not even that they’d finish school. There was no help from anyone, not from my family or my husband’s.’

Tina had heard about the Transforming Communities programme that her local church was planning to run through Tearfund partner Church Action for Relief and Holistic Development (CAFRAHD). But they were waiting for a facilitator to start the training.

‘I was in church in 2022 and they told us about Transforming Communities again..’ This time there was a facilitator who selected three people to be trained and start the programme. Tina was chosen as a trainee and the resulting change to her life was extraordinary…

‘Transforming Communities has opened my mind’
Tina

‘After the training, I realised that when God has a purpose for his people you have to do everything within your power to fulfil it. Transforming Communities has helped us in many ways. I learned that you don’t have to look far for what you need. You just use what’s available around you.

‘I used to think only men could handle money and build things. I held myself back. Even when my husband was alive, I would wait for him to take action. Now, Transforming Communities has opened my mind. I’ve gained a lot of knowledge that’s helped me send my children to school. The programme gave me strength.’

A woman wearing a white tshirt and long skirt smiles as she looks at a woman stood at a wooden stool with vegetables. Another woman behind the stool passes her a small bag.

Tina used to believe only men could handle money, now she’s a successful businesswoman.

This newfound strength was put into action one special morning. Tina woke up her children declaring: ‘Let’s go to the rock!’ So the family went to a large nearby rock formation and started to break up stones to sell as raw materials. This has become a significant source of income, allowing Tina to build a better home, pay for her children’s schooling, and support her family.

Tina also took a job as an office assistant, which provides a stable income that supplements her earnings from selling stones and gravel. She applied for and secured this position based on the motivation and confidence she gained from taking part in the Transforming Communities training.

Tina is now a Transforming Communities facilitator, helping many others in her community find the strength and determination she found to lift themselves out of poverty.

Tina was inspired by the Transforming Communities training to use the rocks around her to break up and sell as building materials.

‘I really want to thank CAFRAHD and the Transforming Communities programme for giving us this knowledge and helping us understand how to help communities. And how to awaken the church so that the people come to Christ, and learn how to live a life of fullness.’

Thank you for your faithful regular gifts. This is just one example of how you are enabling whole-life transformation, not just for individuals but for whole families and entire communities.

Enjoy a reflective moment of Ugandan worship

Worship music is essential to Ugandan churches, acting as a powerful expression of faith and community. It encourages unity and spiritual connection through vibrant rhythms and heartfelt melodies. Put the sound up, or your headphones on, to listen to a traditional worship song from Tina's choir at Kaabong Town Church.

Paul, a Transforming Communities facilitator, has helped to build new homes, proper latrines and improved farming in his community.

Toilets for all

Paul, aged 28, from Lokwakaremoe village in Uganda, has transformed his life and the lives of those around him thanks to the Transforming Communities training. He shares his story of how generous support like yours is making a huge difference to families like his….

‘Through Transforming Communities, most of my trainees have gained the knowledge to open up their land, and their farms are now doing well.

‘We’ve also been encouraging people to build toilets. We started with two, then three, then four. And now there are five. Even more are planning to dig latrines, and some have already started.’

A man and woman hold hands, the man has a tool slung over his shoulder. Behind them out of focus are some trees and the corner of a straw roof.

Paul and his wife, Gloria, are passionate about building toilets to keep their community safe and healthy.

Paul also warned members of the community about open defecation and how it causes diseases.

‘That’s why we are falling sick all the time. I shared this knowledge with most of the church members, and many of them have started building two or more huts, bathing shelters and toilets.

‘So, by the end of this year, we’ll make sure that all 60 members have their toilets. We’ll work as a team to dig, build, and put roofs on the toilets. Today, we’re working on a friend’s toilet, and tomorrow we’ll move on to someone else’s. We’ll continue until everyone has one.

A man puts his arm around a woman, who is holding a child in her arm. The man holds a bible with his other arm. In the background, out of focus is a straw roof.

Paul, Gloria's young baby, will now grow up in a community with decent toilets.

‘As for me and my family, we are very happy. I am personally impressed with the Transforming Communities programme. It has changed my life!’

These are just two examples of the amazing impact you’re having. Your prayers and giving are equipping local churches in communities across the world to help families break the cycle of poverty. Poverty is not God’s plan. You are. Thank you.
