Saturday 26 August 2023

The Drumlanrig Cycle Challenge has been getting people on their bikes and enjoying some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery since 2006. The routes have changed a bit over the years but the aim remains the same – to enjoy a fantastic day of cycling on largely traffic-free roads, whilst helping people living in poverty around the world to transform their lives.

New for this year, the course offers three routes taking in Scotland’s breathtaking scenery, all starting and ending at the magnificent Drumlanrig castle.

A castle surrounded by trees and grass

Drumlanrig Castle

Route 1: Tour of the Lowther Hills

This 71 mile route explores the valleys and passes of the Lowther Hills including the highest villages in Scotland. As this route avoids any very narrow rough roads, it is perfect for clubs or other groups who want to ride together. As well as a “big feed” at base camp over the lunch time period, there will also be feed stations en route to keep you going.

Entry fee: £35 per rider, please see below for further registration details.

Route 2: Drumlanrig Historic Route

For those wishing to have a more leisurely cycle, this 25 mile route visits the site of the very blacksmiths where Kirkpaick McMillan built the world’s first pedal propelled bicycle, and also passes the memorial to Holocaust heroic martyr Jane Haining. You will additionally see Maxwelton Chapel and will have the opportunity to look out for the sculptures of world renowned artist Andy Goldsworthy.

For this route, there will be an option to cycle along with a ride leader who will fill in on some of the historical details along the way. Or you can, of course, complete the route on your own, at your own pace.

Please note, there will be no feed stations on this route, however there will be the “big feed” back at base camp for you full of your favourite sandwiches and, of course, home baking!

Entry fee: £30 per rider, please see below for further registration details.

Route 3: The Kirkpatrick Loop

The Kirkpatrick Loop is a wonderful 10 mile historic family-friendly adventure suitable for families (children 10 and above) and those wishing to take in beautiful Scottish scenery.

Depending on the pace of cyclists, this route should take you approximately 2 hours to complete. There is a wonderful cafe located along this route at Penpont and there will be plenty of sandwiches and baking available for you at our “big feed” at base camp - perfect for you to have your own family picnic!

Please note, this route will not be marshalled or sign posted. Additionally, as this route consists of some minor roads, it is extremely important that any children taking part are competent cycling on roads, able to adhere to the Highway Code and are accompanied by an adult at all times.

Entry fee: Free to anyone who wishes to participate. Please come along, collect a route map from the main tent and, if you’d like, make a donation towards the work of Tearfund.

  • We recommend using a road bike, but the road quality is such that you should be easily able to complete the route on a hybrid bike. It is essential that you have the basic tools and inner tube replacements to do basic repairs on your own bike.

  • A lot of the Drumlanrig route is on some very minor, very lightly used roads. This is part of the attraction, but it does mean that they are low maintenance priority and can be very rough. Please be aware and take care.

  • We are sorry, but the state does not allow camping on site, and that there is no official campsite for this event. However the Drumlanrig estate have indicated that the Mennock Valley down from Wanlockhead is used a lot by campers and campervans and another small registered location is here https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@55.230005,-3.8379188,18z just up the Scaur Valley.

Further information about other local campsites close to the estate can be found here.
