On Friday 28 September, a powerful earthquake struck Indonesia. It led to a six-metre-high tsunami hitting the city of Palu. More than 1,400 people are confirmed dead but rescuers fear this number will rise significantly.
Many buildings have been badly damaged or destroyed. Thousands of homes have collapsed along with hospitals, hotels and shops, and the airport is not functioning.
As search and rescue efforts continue, our network of church-based relief and development organisations are preparing to respond to urgent needs. This will include the distribution of food, blankets, temporary shelter such as tents or tarpaulins, and medicines. Children separated from their families are particularly vulnerable, and many people are without clean drinking water or electricity.
Our partners are following Jesus’ call to reach out to families in greatest need.
PLEASE GIVE WHAT YOU CAN TODAY
Please also pray for everyone affected and all those working tirelessly in difficult conditions. Several large coastal towns remain cut off by damaged roads and communication lines are down.
A prayer you can use:
Lord, we pray for the people of Indonesia who have already suffered ten earthquakes this year. We lift up to you the families hit by this latest devastating earthquake and tsunami. Comfort those who have lost loved ones and homes, and help to heal and restore injured people.
Strengthen and guide the search and rescue teams, so that they can find and help people in greatest need. And be with Tearfund’s partners and church networks as they respond at this crucial time.
We pray for the people of Palu, the closest town to the earthquake and ask you to comfort families who are facing unimaginable trauma. Draw close to communities as they count the cost of the destruction to lives and homes.
In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
In the unlikely event that we raise more than is needed to support these partners, your gift will be spent on similar emergency responses and to prevent the impact of disasters on other vulnerable communities.
