Ebola in the DRC reaches grim milestone

The second largest outbreak of Ebola in history has reached a grim milestone. More than 2,000 people have been infected in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), according to its health ministry.

The latest surge of cases began in August 2018, and there are now believed to be around 13 new cases reported every day.

The current outbreak is primarily in the North Kivu and Ituri Provinces, in the east of the country. There are also fears it could spread through major cities or across national borders. Just this week the first cross-border case was reported in Uganda.

Tearfund and our partner organisations in the DRC are working in challenging circumstances to try and curb the spread of Ebola.

We recently held a forum in the town of Butembo, where people shared their concerns about the spread of the disease and discussed ways to halt the epidemic. The Mayor of Butembo town said it was a vital opportunity to make progress.

We are also supporting 50 health centres, ensuring they have facilities for keeping good sanitation – including toilets, hand washing facilities and decontamination equipment, in addition to hygiene promotion messages.

You know all the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. You know those who are ill with Ebola, those in fear of it, those who have lost their beloved ones and those working to bring an end to this outbreak. In your mercy, please take away this disease, heal the sick and restore this nation to a place of health and strength.
