Matched Giving Appeal Fundraising FAQs

What is UK Aid Match and how does it work?

UK Aid Match is a scheme that allows the UK public to have a say in how some of the government’s international aid budget is spent. The UK government will match public donations, up to a certain amount and within an agreed timeframe, to selected charities which tackle poverty in developing countries. So this will make your donations go even further.

I read that the match funding limit was £2 million rather than £3 million, what changed?

Originally, the limit was £2 million. On 11 March, the UK government increased the match funding limit to £3 million, meaning even more impact among communities in Pakistan and around the world suffering due to plastic pollution!

The reason the match funding limit was increased is due to the generous response of people like you, reflecting the growing recognition in the UK and internationally that plastic pollution is a crisis that must be addressed urgently.

I have heard that any fundraising for Tearfund between 18 February and 17 May will be doubled by the UK government? Is this true?

Yes. The money you raise before 17 May will be doubled by the UK government, up to £3 million. However, please note that the conditions of the match funding state that:

The fundraising event must take place between 18 February and 17 May 2019 and fundraisers must make it clear to anyone donating that they are fundraising specifically for the Matched Giving appeal.

What do I need to do to ensure my fundraising qualifies for match funding?

The conditions of the match funding state that:

The fundraising event must take place between 18 February and 17 May 2019 and fundraisers must make it clear to anyone donating that they are fundraising specifically for the Matched Giving appeal.

How will the money be spent?

Every pound you raise for Tearfund's Matched Giving appeal will be used to transform lives in countries where the need is greatest.

Match funding from the UK government will be used to tackle waste pollution around the world. In Pakistan, for example, it will enable our partners to set up innovative waste recycling hubs. Not only will these hubs help tackle waste and plastic pollution, they will provide sustainable livelihoods and improve the living conditions in some of Pakistan’s poorest slum communities.

Will all donations to Tearfund qualify?

The money you raise in response to our Matched Giving Appeal from 18 February to 17 May will qualify to be doubled by the UK government, up to a total of £3 million.

Will the UK government match the Gift Aid on donations?

No, only donations will be matched, up to a total of £3 million.
