Why is this year’s quiz online?
As we’ve seen from our own experiences of lockdown, it is entirely possible (and easy) to host a quiz via a video conferencing app, such as Zoom, Skype, Google Meet etc. If you have any questions, please email email@example.com and our team will be happy to help.
How do I host a quiz online?
All you need is a laptop, tablet or smartphone, plus a good internet connection. If technology isn’t your forte, you may wish to find someone who is technologically-minded and can help you.
There are numerous video platforms that you can consider for hosting your quiz night, for example, Zoom, Google Meet, Skype, Microsoft Teams, Facebook Live etc. Many of these platforms offer a free option, however, do be aware that there may be certain restrictions. It may also be helpful to check with your church to see if they already have a subscription to a particular platform. Feel free to use whichever platform works best for you and your group.
For more information about running the quiz, please check out our On the Night hints and tips.
Where will the money raised go?
Your quiz night will help raise vital funds that will empower people to lift themselves out of poverty. You will be helping families – like Alaya’s – who are struggling to feed their children as they battle the devastating effects of the climate crisis.
Who is Alaya?
Alaya lives in Malawi with her husband and three young children. Frequent flooding damages their home and brings diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea. Time and time again, her crops keep failing and, for 11 months of the year, Alaya and her family survive on just one meal a day.
During the quiz night, you will be able learn more about Alaya’s story through our case study video.
Do we have to do the quiz on Saturday 14 November?
We’d love everyone across the country to host their quiz on the same night. Imagine being part of the biggest online quiz ever! However, if Saturday 14 isn’t possible for you, then it’s fine to hold your quiz on a different day. Just let us know when you register by contacting firstname.lastname@example.org
What time will we need to start the quiz?
The quiz is likely to take an hour and half so we recommend that you start at 7.30pm. But, it’s up to you. Attendance numbers will need to be submitted on the dashboard by 8.30pm so that everyone can see the total number of quizzers all around the UK.
What resources will be available?
Once you’ve signed up, you’ll receive an email with a link to all of the resources. We’ll provide everything you need on how to run an online quiz, including eight rounds of questions and answers for you to choose from (we recommend doing six rounds only), our case study film, a quiz night film and social media banners.
To help you with planning and preparation for the night, we’ve also included a template ‘run of the night’ complete with a sample running order you can use (if you wish) to help guide you. You don’t have to use this, but you may like to have a read of how a typical Tearfund quiz night might run.
What if I can’t find my email with the resources link?
Please contact email@example.com and one of the team will be happy to help.
Can I change the running order?
Yes, the quiz is designed to be used flexibly. For those who are able/want to stream the quiz, there is also the option to run the Powerpoint presentation that will have all of the questions and answers on for you.
What subjects will the quiz cover?
All the favourites, including current events, food and drink, history, the natural world, music, geography and sport.
Can I add extra rounds?
Yes, feel free to tailor the rounds to suit your guests. You could even write your own local knowledge round.
How long is the case study film?
The case study film of Alaya’s story is approximately three minutes long.
Can I pause the quiz film wherever I want?
Yes, you’ll have lots of flexibility to run the quiz how you want to.
Is the quiz family friendly? What’s the suggested age?
We’ve designed the quiz to suit all ages, so expect questions that span the generations from high school upwards.
Is the quiz hard? Last year, there were some really tricky questions.
Please stay with us! We listened to your feedback and have provided a more accessible quiz this year, with more rounds and a broader range of questions and topics.
How do I record the number of participants?
We will have an online dashboard ready on the night where you'll be able to tell us how many people are taking part in your quiz.
How do I find the dashboard?
Keep an eye out for the email that will tell you how to access the dashboard. You’ll then be able to input your participant numbers.
Will we be able to find out how many people have taken part across the UK?
Yes, after 8.30pm – and after you’ve submitted your participant numbers – you’ll be able to see the grand total of participants who took part in the quiz.
How can people donate?
People will be able to donate via your personal JustGiving page (reminder: you will need to set this up prior to the evening). We suggest showing the case study film before halftime and then asking people to give generously. Another option is to ask people to donate what they think the event is worth. Have a look at our fundraising suggestions in the Big Quiz Night guide for more fun ideas.
How do I send the money in?
Paying in your donations to Tearfund is quick, simple and easy.
