About

An opportunity to join our partners in rural Tanzania as they facilitate sustainable community-based development.

Rift Valley is an Anglican Diocese in Central Tanzania, where many people struggle to make a living from small-scale subsistence farming. This semi-arid region has incredibly high levels of poverty.

Rift Valley has been at the forefront of community empowerment in its work to strengthen the local church as they reach out to make a difference. They work with 267 local churches, supporting them to engage with community groups, schools and hospitals to enable positive change in the region.

On this placement you’ll be living and learning alongside Rift Valley staff, experiencing rural Tanzania and meeting the inspirational people who are changing their communities for good.

What will you be doing?

  • Assisting in primary and secondary schools with various activities, such as teaching classes, playing sport and training teachers.
  • Supporting community development initiatives, including at a Mothers’ Union group.
  • Serving and working with the Rift Valley staff to meet community members and gather stories for research and evaluation.
  • Working at the St John’s Seminary nursery and pre-school.
  • Working and serving in the hospital and pharmacy.

What can you bring?

This placement is rural and challenging, but above all it is an incredible opportunity to see and contribute to Rift Valley’s work. You’ll need to be willing to try new things and to adapt to very different daily life. As part of a team of volunteers you'll be building relationships and growing as individuals. You’ll bring commitment, excitement and a willingness to get involved where the need is greatest.
