Spend two weeks living and learning alongside Eagles Relief and Development Programme, a Tearfund partner improving food security and reducing poverty across Malawi.

In Malawi over half the population live below the poverty line and one in four people struggle to find enough food each day. Most people depend on agriculture for survival, but unpredictable weather patterns caused by climate change mean that crops are failing, and families are struggling to afford the increasing cost of food.

Since 2002 Eagles Relief and Development Programme have been working with local churches, addressing the root causes of food insecurity. They teach communities sustainable agricultural practices, including how to grow drought-resistant crops and increase soil fertility. Eagles have also established childcare centres for children under five years old, which educate and provide food for the children. They also support local churches to establish self-help groups, allowing local people to put small savings into the association on a weekly basis, which can then be taken out as a loan to start or improve a small business.

What will you be doing?

  • Participating in the life of the local church, leading Bible studies and devotions.
  • Helping to plant and cultivate crops with communities adapting to climate change.
  • Supporting initiatives to tackle drought and prevent flooding.
  • Supporting training on sustainable agricultural practices.
  • Working alongside local teachers to equip them with tools, resources and creative ideas for teaching.
  • Supporting community projects that work with vulnerable children, the elderly, people with disabilities, and those living with HIV.

What can you bring?

Two weeks in Malawi will show you how the local church is at the heart of tackling poverty and injustice. You’ll need to be flexible, adaptable, and ready to work as part of a team of volunteers. Bring your energy, your passion and a willingness to go deeper with God and others.
