Spend two weeks living and learning alongside Eagles Relief and Development Programme, a Tearfund partner improving food security and reducing poverty across Malawi.
In Malawi over half the population live below the poverty line and one in four people struggle to find enough food each day. Most people depend on agriculture for survival, but unpredictable weather patterns caused by climate change mean that crops are failing, and families are struggling to afford the increasing cost of food.
Since 2002 Eagles Relief and Development Programme have been working with local churches, addressing the root causes of food insecurity. They teach communities sustainable agricultural practices, including how to grow drought-resistant crops and increase soil fertility. Eagles have also established childcare centres for children under five years old, which educate and provide food for the children. They also support local churches to establish self-help groups, allowing local people to put small savings into the association on a weekly basis, which can then be taken out as a loan to start or improve a small business.
