Around the world, people who were already vulnerable are being pushed further into poverty due to things like Covid-19, the climate crisis, and conflict. Saddle up for an epic ride and raise funds to help bring hope to people living in extreme poverty.

This September, we’re hoping to raise £10,000. This could train 4,650 people in business and life skills, equipping them to lift themselves out of poverty

Saturday 3 September 2022

The Drumlanrig Cycle Challenge has been getting people on their bikes and enjoying some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery since 2006. The routes have changed a bit over the years but the aim remains the same – to enjoy a fantastic day of cycling on largely traffic-free roads, whilst helping people living in poverty around the world to transform their lives.

This year, the course offers three routes:

All routes start and end at the magnificent Drumlanrig castle and take in Scotland’s breathtaking scenery.

This event will be organised in line with ongoing government guidelines in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

As ever, there’ll be feed stations en route to keep you going, as well as a celebratory big feed.

The registration fee for this year's cycle is £30 per person which will go towards covering the costs of the cycle.

However, the Drumlanrig Cycle Challenge is a fundraising event and we ask every cyclist to consider either:

These two options will be optional during the registration stage. If you decide to fundraise £108 for Tearfund, a JustGiving page will be automatically created for you.

All money raised through these two options will help bring hope to people living in extreme poverty. People like Gilbert in Rwanda.

The power of a bicycle

Gilbert lives in eastern Rwanda. His early years were marked by a difficult living situation involving a lot of violence, causing him to leave when he was only 8 years old.

‘I didn't have anywhere to sleep. I spent seven years in that life. I had to steal food to survive,’ recalls Gilbert.

With a particular interest in choir music, he decided he wanted to visit his local church, which turned out to be one of Tearfund’s partners in the area.

‘I came to the church and was welcomed.’

Gilbert quickly found a home there. ‘The church was like a family,’ he says. ‘They were standing in the gap of the family I could have had.’

Through a self-help group they ran, the church provided Gilbert with both business and life skills which helped turn his life around; someone from the church even gave him a bicycle, which he committed to repaying the cost of within six months. Gilbert received all that he needed to start a small business and so he was able to establish a taxi cooperative and now, thanks to the support of the self-help group, he is a husband and a father, and is able to keep his family fed and safe.

Every £108 raised could train 5 self-help groups of 10 people like Gilbert in business and life skills, equipping them to lift themselves out of poverty.
