Step two: choose your venue

Our resources are designed to make hosting a Big Quiz Night in person a breeze. However, if you’d prefer to host an online quiz, then we've got you covered!

If you’re planning to host an in-person quiz, make sure to get your venue booked as early as possible. If you’d rather host an online quiz, choose what platform you would like to run it on (eg Zoom, Google Meet etc). We recommend using the one you are most familiar with, or that’s most popular with your congregation.

If you'd rather join us online, we will be streaming the quiz live on JustGiving. Sign up and you will receive this link nearer the time.

The Big Quiz Night is all about community. So why not use the opportunity to have a big meal together? Because the only thing better than a poverty-busting quiz night is a poverty-busting quiz night with delicious food being shared.

Some useful guidance on providing food can be found here.

We’re happy to talk this through with you if that would be helpful. Just email us at teamtearfund@tearfund – we’d love to chat!

Step three: gather your team

Behind every great Big Quiz Night there’s a great Big Quiz Night team. Assemble your quiz heroes to help with the techy bits, catering, welcoming, setting up and clearing away.

Step four: decide your running order

We want your quiz to work for you. A full quiz film including six of the rounds will be available as a whole to play from start to finish (and can be paused when needed). The film will include a fundraising video for you to play at half-time. A powerpoint of all the questions will also be available, with the option of mixing and matching your running order.

If you'd prefer to host the evening yourself, an example quizmaster script is also provided, along with the questions and answers to all the rounds and fun ideas for interactive rounds.

We include an inspiring fundraising film that will help your church see the difference the night is making. We suggest showing it just before the half-time break. After the film you can share the link to your JustGiving page. Make sure the QR code (the black and white square that you can scan with your phone) is visible during the break and ask people to donate generously. If you’re unsure about any of this, just check out our fundraising tips page.

Step five: let the world know about your quiz!

Maybe not the whole world, but you get the idea. The Big Quiz Night is an amazing opportunity to get your community together, so make sure they know all about it. You can use the artwork and promotional film provided on our resources page to advertise your Big Quiz Night in your church newsletter, your church services, on local notice boards, or on social media and group chats. You could share on local group pages too as a way to bring in people from outside your congregation.

Step six: be part of something (even) bigger!

We will have an online dashboard ready on the night where you'll be able to tell us how many people are taking part in your quiz. It will also show how many other people are taking part across the country. If possible, please log your numbers by 8.30pm so we can add up all the figures. After 8.30pm, you’ll be able to see the totaliser: the total number of people from all across the UK taking part in the quiz!
