Typhoon Mangkhut has now left the Philippines, having made landfall in Baggao town of Cagayan province, North Luzon at 1.40 AM on Saturday 15th Sept 2018. So far, reports suggest that at least 591,762 people have been affected, with the number expected to rise as the full impact becomes clearer.

At least 59 people have reportedly been killed, mostly as a result of landslides. The airport serving the region remains closed. Many houses are damaged or destroyed. About a third of those affected are farmers, and there has been significant loss of both rice and corn crops.

Local partners are conducting rapid assessments and working to provide immediate relief assistance to affected communities, focusing in particular on water and sanitation, food, and other essential items. Partners have plans in place to provide psycho-social support to children and young people who have been affected by the crisis. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected.

Typhoon Mangkhut, local name Ompong, a Category 5 Pacific Typhoon, is moving towards the northern part of Luzon in the Philippines. We are monitoring the situation as it develops, and our partners are preparing to conduct rapid assessments for a potential response.

We are looking at options for distributing cash grants to people who are affected, to help people who have lost everything access essential items they need, such as hygiene items (toothbrushes, towels, soap), clean drinking water, kitchen utensils and key ingredients, such as rice.

Please pray for those affected.
