Tearfund reaction to Unilever announcement

07 Oct 2019

Unilever pledges to halve their use of virgin plastics by 2025 and collect more plastic than they sell.

Dr Ruth Valerio, Director of Global Influencing and Advocacy at Tearfund said: "This [announcement] shows Unilever is stepping up to take responsibility for the plastic pollution they have helped create. People living in poverty are adversely impacted because they have no choice but to dump or burn plastic and waste near their homes. This leads to serious health problems like cholera and cancer. Burning also contributes to climate change.

"We welcome these bold and ambitious commitments, but Unilever must commit to pay the full costs of collection and management of their rubbish and collect as much plastic as they sell in each country. "Although it does not go as far as we would like, Unilever's second pledge to cut new plastic use by 50% by 2025 is the most ambitious we have seen yet from a major consumer goods company and we hope this will raise the bar for other companies such as Coca-Cola, Nestle and PepsiCo."
