Every day Alea feared that a bomb would land nearby and kill her children. When they heard planes fly over, the family would hide in a space next to the fridge. Food started to run out – her children begged her for bread, but she had nothing to give them.
Pregnant and frightened, Alea* took her family and escaped the violence in Syria. They lost their home and everything that was familiar to them.
Alea’s family are among 79.5 million people worldwide who have been forced to flee their home. This harvest, you can help families like Alea’s rebuild what’s been lost.
When they arrived in Beirut, Lebanon, they had nothing. Tearfund’s local partner is working with organisations like the Tahaddi centre, which sits at the heart of the makeshift area that Alea and her family now lives in.
The Tahaddi centre provided Alea and her family with the urgent essentials they needed to live with dignity. This included mattresses and blankets so the family didn’t have to sleep on the floor, as well as food vouchers. Alea’s children received support to help them overcome their trauma. Alea joined the Tahaddi centre’s sewing programme, where she learnt tailoring so that she could begin to earn an income to help feed her family.
And throughout the pandemic, the centre’s support has not wavered. The crowded conditions of the settlement make families extremely vulnerable to coronavirus, so they have distributed hygiene kits to help keep everyone safe. And in August, when the horrific explosion happened, Tearfund and our partners were quick to respond to people’s immediate needs. Alea and her family were shaken by the blast, but thankfully unharmed.
Alea’s family are just one of many that desperately need our help. The situation here is worsening – the impact of the explosion and the pandemic have made life even harder for refugees. Half of the population live below the poverty line in Lebanon, and in Beirut alone 500,000 children are going hungry.
Please follow us where the need is greatest this harvest and be a part of this life-giving work. Your gift will go towards supporting families like Alea’s around the world.
