  • If you are able to give on a regular basis, we greatly appreciate supporters setting up a Direct Debit. It’s straightforward and convenient for you and it reduces the costs we have in processing gifts, and ensures that a higher percentage of your donations are spent on helping people in poverty.

When you give regularly, you are offering hope for the long term – not just easing current suffering. Your regular gift will help us to plan for the future because we know there will be consistent funds available. It also means that we can act quickly and effectively when disasters strike, or when hunger escalates into an emergency situation.

Regular gifts help support people to grow enough food and improve their water and sanitation, as well as enabling communities to become more resilient to natural disasters and the effects of climate change.

When you sign up to give regularly, you will start to receive our World of Difference updates. These feature amazing stories from across the world. Every time a new community, every time a surprising destination...

Through these updates, you will get to taste and see how your giving is making a huge difference. You will connect to communities so that you can pray specifically for God’s work globally – and will hear stories of faith and challenge that you will never see on the news.

  • It’s most cost-effective if you give through our website. However, if you are making a one-off gift to Tearfund by bank transfer, please remember to quote your Tearfund supporter number when making the gift. This is so that we can identify your gift and ensure it is allocated correctly to your record. Please do contact us (020 3906 3906, [email protected]) if you need to know your Tearfund supporter number.

If you are setting up a Standing Order to Tearfund we would be very grateful if you could contact us first (020 3906 3906, [email protected]), to make sure we have your bank details, and a reference number to quote to your bank with each Standing Order payment. This will help us greatly in identifying your gifts, and allocating them correctly to your record. Otherwise it is likely that the gifts will come to us anonymously, meaning that we cannot reclaim tax on the donations. We would also not be able to thank you for them, or trace the gifts should a query arise.

  • If you're giving a gift of £18 and over, processing costs are cheaper with a debit card. A credit card donation works out more cost effective for gifts of less than £18. The current costs associated with processing gifts are as follows: (as of 11th Nov 2020)

    Debit cards: 25p per transaction

Visa and MasterCard credit cards: 1.5% of each transaction

PayPal: 1.4% of each transaction & a 20p donation fee

This means, for example, that a gift of £100 made by Debit cards incur a 25p fee and Visa/MasterCard credit cards incur a £1.50 fee. For donations given through our website there is an additional 15p charge on top of the figures quoted above.

  • Tearfund and Stewardship enjoy a close working relationship and we partner together to increase Kingdom impact. Giving with Stewardship enables you to give to multiple organisations from one source point and manage that giving yourself. Gifts given via Tearfund directly are processed quicker than if given by Stewardship as there is an additional step in processing. Either of these methods for giving to Tearfund will ensure that your gift has the intended Kingdom impact to support the global church to end extreme poverty.

Tearfund and Stewardship both need to be notified if you are wanting your Gift Aid to be sent directly to Tearfund – this is minus the 3.5% admin fee from Stewardship for their professional service support. If not, then with a Stewardship account your Gift Aid (Tax Relief) can accrue in your Stewardship account which you can give monthly or let it accrue in your account then give the accrued funds to Tearfund.

  • We are very grateful for any gifts we receive but we would ask supporters to give their name and postal address. If gifts are given anonymously we are unable to trace the gift in case of a subsequent query about the gift, and we are unable to claim Gift Aid if we cannot identify the supporter who has given the gift.

If you are concerned that giving your name and address will result in lots of unwanted mailings, please be assured that we will not give your details to any other organisations. If you do not wish to receive any mailings from Tearfund, please do let us know.

  • The easiest way of doing this is to set up a JustGiving page for your friends and family to donate to. We have resources to help you promote your JustGiving page to your friends and family. By fundraising in this way, Tearfund will be sent the money automatically and we will know it’s from your event. If you pledge your birthday or sign up to fundraise through your wedding here, we will help create your JustGiving page.

If you would prefer to fundraise offline, you can collect the money from your friends and send a cheque to Tearfund with a letter explaining that it is from your birthday/wedding.

To save on admin time and costs, it would be helpful if we received all the proceeds from you directly. If, however, your friends and family are sending in cheques for the event themselves, it would be very helpful if they could include a short covering note, stating that the gift is given in lieu of wedding/birthday presents, as well as stating your name, address and your supporter number (we can provide you with this).

If your friends and family would like to donate via our website, they can follow these steps:

    • click ‘donate now’ on our website
    • under ‘I want to give to’, select “where the need is greatest”
    • under “this gift is”, select ‘this gift is in lieu of a wedding/birthday etc…’
    • fill in the box that tells us who the celebrator is (the name of the person asking for donations instead of presents)
    • then proceed with the payment

We hope that you understand that it is not always possible to link every gift that comes in on your behalf. This is because we may not have received enough information to link the gift to you. To help us link as many gifts as possible, please encourage your friends and family to complete the form on our website as fully as possible.

  • 3D Secure is an authentication step for online payments. It aims to decrease the risk of fraud by adding a security layer for online purchases made with credit or debit cards.

When you are making a donation on our website, a window should automatically pop up in your browser with details. You may be asked to enter a password or code to verify your identity. Please note: if your 3D Secure verification fails, you will not be charged.

If the 3D Secure verification isn't working please try the following steps:

    1. Attempt the payment again. Make sure you are entering the correct password or code (this may be sent to your phone by your bank).

    2. Disable your advert blocker (also known as a pop up blocker) for a few minutes. 3D Secure opens up in an additional window that is often blocked by pop-up blockers.

However, this is not something we can facilitate.
